Yesterday I went to the grocery store and my debit card was declined. I thought there was more than enough to cover the purchase. I used a different card and when I came home I went online and checked the balance. There was plenty to cover the purchase and more. So I thought maybe there was something wrong with the magnetic strip on the back of the card. I wiped it with a clean soft cloth and went to the bank today to withdraw funds. The ATM machine said “Transaction cancelled”.
I was angry because I could not access my money. I came home and called the 800# and they told me that the card was suspended because of activity that looked fraudulent. They asked me many questions to verify that I was indeed the card holder and then the customer service rep told me about purchases that I did not make. She told me to go back to the ATM while I had them on the phone and they would allow me access to my account so that I could pull money out. When I finished my transaction they suspended the card and I filed a claim over the phone to cancel those purchases that were not mine. A new card will be issued and mailed to me within 3 – 5 business days.
I cannot believe that someone hacked my debit card number and was using it to make purchases. Last week I had someone from Russia try to hack my email account which I received an alert and quickly changed the password.
Technology is great except for the people that are praying on individuals and hacking their credit cards accounts, bank accounts and email accounts. It is mind boggling that there are people that are so vicious and greedy. Maybe using checks was not such a bad thing. How do you protect yourself from people like this? I look forward to reading your comments.
