As I continue to deal with hearing impairment I am looking for work or possible self-employment. I have a new pair of hearing aids that are being adjusted. Every other week I go to the audiologist and I tell her what worked or did not work and she makes adjustments to the hearing aids. She has been really wonderful at really listening to me and asking questions that will help her help me.
I am also working with the Department of Rehabilitation. They assigned me a counselor who I like and who is trying to understand my strengths, my past work experience and my disability. The counselor has passed me over to a career counselor that works with people with disabilities. I like her as well although so far she has only emailed me links to regular jobs. The jobs are like other ones I have found on my own, nothing that is specific for someone that has a hearing impairment; and what that is I’m not sure except I really have a hard time listening on a land line telephone so no phones and it is a bit difficult for me to hear and understand in a noisy environment. So no loud offices.
I continue to research companies and send out resumes. It’s not that there is nothing out there because sometimes I get an interview with a company and I have been offered positions. However the pay does not pay for my gasoline to get back and forth to the job. I think companies think they can get away with offering the lowest hourly since there are unemployed people and the economy is still not back to a thriving world. I have good skills and abilities and education and I want to utilize them for the success of all involved.
Yes I know I need the income but at the same time I want to feel good about the work I am doing and feel good about myself. I’m trying to stay positive and believe there is something good just around the corner…I’m hoping it does not take much longer and that I will be able to look back on this and help someone else that has a hearing impairment or disability. Believe in the Universe!
