Rising Water Rates

I received a notice the other day from the Community Services District proposing an increase in the water rates to fund an emergency water supply project.  The increase would be an additional $13.00 for all single family residences.

The community is adhering to the limited units we are allowed to use.  Most of the residents here are on fixed incomes (retired), others are on low income and cannot afford to keep paying higher costs for water.  Many of us that live here think that the water district officials are being greedy, they want more income because we the residents have been lowering our water usage.

The water rates are expensive as it is.  This is a tourist driven area, there are outhouses for public restrooms and restaurants do not serve water, if you want water in a restaurant you are charged for it.  Many tourists have already mentioned the outhouses to some of the shop owners and workers.  It will be no surprise if there are less tourists this summer.

Instead of raising rates they should be looking for solutions.  Where else can we get water reserves from?  What other community has gone through this and how did they find a solution?

Stop making the residents suffer.  Instead of increasing rates, ask for solutions.  There is a fantastic university near by.  Ask the students to come up with a solution, make it a contest and award a prize for the best idea that can be implemented immediately.  There must be a solution that does not penalize the citizens that are doing all they can to help minimize the water usage.
